Boundaries… we all know they are important but do we all really have them? It is important to set boundaries between work and life. Even though we all know how much of a struggle it is.
Not matter how hard we try, we find ourselves checking our work email during the time we have set aside for Netflix or working on a project on a Saturday afternoon when we should be spending the day recuperating from the past week.
The line between work & personal life is blurring and you have to get ahold of it before it completely disappears. And unfortunately it goes both ways – that includes taking personal calls during office hours or online shopping before your next meeting.
Now… our lives aren’t going to be packaged into neat compartments so we are bound to have a little crossover but it is ideal for us to maintain balance & set boundaries.
But in order to set boundaries between work and life, here are a couple tips to make it easier!
- Accept That You Aren’t Perfect | This isn’t meant to be discouraging but it does need to be said. You aren’t perfect and this transition to setting boundaries isn’t going to be perfect either.
- Recognize Your Limits | Like I said earlier, you aren’t going to be perfect so it is important to know your limits beforehand. I know that I am not going to be able to completely shut work out on the weekends but I do always try to make some work-free time. Boundaries aren’t a one-size-fits-all so figure out what works best for you.
- Create a Schedule | I always like to make sure I set work-free time for myself during the week so I have some time to decompress. Set time during the month to reevaluate to make sure I am sticking to my plan and boundaries.
But in the end, one thing you should remember is that you can always adjust your boundaries when necessary. Make time for yourself and reevaluate every month to make sure your priorities are straight. Nothing is set in stone.
Also, remember to not be so hard on yourself. Being constantly connected can make things difficult. That is why setting these boundaries can help you disconnect. It isn’t going to be easy but if you take these steps and apply them, you can move forward.
I have one last question for you… Do you set boundaries for yourself?
